As previously reported, Angelo’s in McFarland has closed.  The good news is that the restaurant will not stay empty for long.  Picasso’s will be opening a new location in the building soon.  This should upgrade the McFarland dining scene considerably.  The Picasso’s off of Verona Road serves up good pizza and creative entrees, and we anticipate that this new location will follow suit.

Hopefully the villagers will support this new venture.

What are you talking about? “Upgrade the McFarland Dining Scene?” Hardly. Angelo’s in McFarland was owned/operated by Chef John LaRue. He poured his heart and soul into that place and was not supported by the “McFarland Community”.

How can you possibly say “Upgrage the McFarland Dining Scene”? You obviously never at at the McFarland Angelos. The menu and quality was totaly different than the Angelo’s in Monona.

John served house made shrimp and scallop sausages, an 8 oz tenderloin filet served over porcini mushroom risotto with gorgonzola compound butter, various creations involving wild boar and duck confit, and his seafood specials were to die for.

I hardly think Picasso’s will serve wild boar anything, or 30 oz bone in ribeyes with pommes ana.

In any case, I wish luck to picasso’s. Maybe McFarland will support this restaurant.
But in a community where the Taste of MacFarland festival consists of Quick Trip selling brats, Culvers, and Pizza Hut, I doubt it.

    Too bad.

Enough bashing of McFarlanders, already! Angelo’s was fine, not exceptional, but good enough. The view and atmosphere, not so great, but not your fault. While the upscale offerings were impressive, you may have overlooked the middle-diner who enjoys ‘regular’ Italian as well, and who may have accompanied those looking for a higher-end experience. That was most certainly our experience, on the half-dozen tries we gave it.

No one is bashing anyone, only sharing facts.

  4. McFarland resident says:

Chef John LaRue apparently had all the right stuff in the wrong place. Although the restaurant was not The Ritz, it was a pleasant place to enjoy great food, with a bit of atmosphere and music that didn’t upset your stomach while you ate, topped off with friendly and efficient service.

If Mr. LaRue takes his talents elsewhere, I hope he will publicize well. Anyone who can prepare a tenderloin that makes your mouth water at the thought of it, is worth following to the ends of the earth! Although I thought it was just perfect when he was right here in McFarland.

    it opened last night!

I was extremely sorry to see Angelo’s in McFarland close. Angelo’s served fabulous food and if you were lucky enough to get Lesly as a waitress, you were in heaven!

I agree with Adamant’s post completely. This McFarland resident did appreciate it and supported it as much as possible but, disappointingly, not enough other fellow residents did. A terrible shame.

I hope John and Lesly will find the right niche and that Picassos, if deserved, will get supported by the community.

I am still kinda new to mc farland but so far enjoy Picassos.. When i wanted angelos I was informed they didnt deliver:/

  9. Kate says:

I too miss Angelo’s and was crushed when I heard they were closing. Not only was the food out of this world, but the service was the best I’ve had in years. Lesly’s warmth and gracious smile were so welcoming and I always followed her wine recommendations. I wish her and John all the best and hope they open another restaurant. It would be a shame to waste all that talent.

  10. Judy says:

My husband and I live in Mc Farland and went to Angelo’s at least once a week. We were also really disapointed when that fine restaurant closed. We loved the service and Lesly and John were both extreamly talented. Making everyone who came feel really welcome and special. We miss them very much.

  11. Pops says:

Picasso’s is wonderful. I have eaten at the one off of Verona Rd. so I was excited to see the new place opening in McFarland. The pizza and pasta are top notch and I can’t wait for the full menu to be rolled out.

  12. Another McFarland Resident says:

As far as Angelo’s is concerned, you shouldn’t be able to charge $20 for wild boar when your tables are covered with paper and the curtains are poorly sewn pieces of scrap fabric. If you’re going to charge people downtown Madison prices then at least create a restaurant atmosphere that doesn’t seem like the staff are “playing house”.

  13. McFarland Resident says:

Does anyone know where John LaRue and Lesly have gone? If they are operating another restaurant somewhere, I want to be among the first to know!!!
