The Dueling Chefs competition pits chefs in a one-on-one battle against the clock. Each round features a mystery ingredient that the chefs must use in two dishes of their choosing. With thirty minutes to create culinary masterpieces, the excitement and intensity is palpable. To determine a winner, chefs must impress a panel of three local celebrity judges along with a judge chosen from the audience. The winner of each round moves on until ultimately two will reach the finals. The winner of that matchup will be crowned the 2010 Culinary Conqueror.
This year’s competitors come from restaurants across the city, including the reigning Culinary Conqueror, Chef Daniel Smith from the Dayton Street Grille. His competitors yield from, The Blue Marlin, Brasserie V, Bunky’s Café, Captain Bill’s, Restaurant Muramoto and Liliana’s. With such diverse culinary styles, the showdown will appeal to audience members and judges alike.

The Dueling Chefs competition is included in admission to the Food & Wine Show; there are no additional tickets or passes needed.

The McFarland House Cafe, 5923 Exchange Street in McFarland, will host Helping Hands for Honduras, a photo exhibit documenting recent mission work done by local volunteers.  The exhibit will open with a reception on Saturday, February 20 from noon til three, with special coffees and a special menu being served.  Proceeds will go to Sharing Resources Worldwide in support of their Honduran missions.

The exhibit, which runs for the next month, showcases the work of photographer Michael L. Sweeney  and it documents the efforts of SRW volunteers to aid the children of Honduras.  Through the help of Sharing Resources Worldwide and its volunteers, many children receive the medical assistance needed to ensure a healthier, happier life full of hope for the future.  Visit MichaelLSweeney.com for more information about the exhibit.

The American Liver Foundation and The Madison Club are presenting The Flavors of Madison, a unique culinary event to benefit the American Liver Foundation’s Cause!  This event has drawn the support of the elite Madison chefs and restaurants.  On February 28, 2010, the lucky attendees will be treated to a creative culinary gala featuring the masterpieces created by these chefs.  This year, the supporting restaurants and chefs include:

The chefs, assisted by their sous chefs, not only battled each other, they also battled the makeshift equipment issues that such a setup inherently creates. And yet, as the pictures attest to, they took this competition incredibly seriously and in the end both sides turned out some spectacular, beautifully plated food.

Dishes:
Muramoto:  Lobster, Three Ways; Lobster Jambalaya with Avocado Marble and Chinese Sausage Shavings
Liliana’s:  Warm Salad of Mushroom, Bacon and Bok Choi with Tomato Salsa and Lobster;  Sweet Potato Pancake with grilled pineapple, and brown butter sauteed lobster on an avocado puree, with glazed carrot puree and tomato oil

In a very clear upset, Chef Daniel Smith and Sous Chef Scott Peterson of  Liliana’s beat out Restaurant Muramato’s Chef Justin Carlisle and Sous Chef Shinji Muramoto.
